Posted August 13, 2009 (edited) These are Gunneras that grow along the Panamerican Highway, build during the second world war all the way from the USA to Panama. In Costa Rica it reaches 3400 metres above sealevel. For many kilometres there are Gunneras , among some interesting alpine vegetation.

Prepare the Gunnera Manicata Seeds for Planting. Place your dry Gunnera manicata seeds under a layer of moistened coffee filters or under folded kitchen towels. The new site had a deep hole dug which is part lined with plastic to retain water about three feet down.Two of us moved the large root ball and a couple of hundredweight of soil on a wheelbarrow.It's been watered in and surrounded by good quality soil.covered in straw and styrene against any coming frosts.

A study conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society has found that Gunnera manicata has been lost to cultivation since it was introduced, and that plants thought to be Gunnera manicata are actually a hybrid of Gunnera manicata and Gunnera tinctoria, which has been named Gunnera × cryptica.
